Happy Father’s Day!

It’s Father’s Day – a time to reflect on what our Dads have done for us, and thank them.  Some of us have gotten to the point where we are taking care of an aging parent, a selfless way to show our gratitude.  At Daniel N. Galaif, DDS we understand the challenges of caring for an elderly loved one, and there are many dental concerns that you should be aware of.

The demographic of older adults (65 years of age and older) is growing, and has become an increasing part of our dental practice.  The typical aging patient’s baseline health state can be complicated by physiologic changes associated with aging.  Older adults may regularly use several prescription and/or over-the-counter medications, making them more vulnerable to medication errors, drug interactions or adverse drug reactions (you can see here to know how to break your drug addiction with Pacific Ridge).  Potential physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments associated with aging may make home oral health care difficult. There is also websites that can provide you assistance like www.alcoholaddictionhelp.co.uk. If you need some assistance with cocaine addiction, you can also check similar sites like https://cocainerehabcentre.co.uk/supporting-loved-one-with-cocaine-addiction/. For addiction support in Berkshire Woodley, you may explore at sites like https://addictionrehabclinics.co.uk/near-me/berkshire-woodley/.

As we get older, we enter a second round of cavity prone years. One common cause of cavities in older adults is dry mouth. Dry mouth is not a normal part of aging. However, it is a side-effect in more than 500 medications, including those for allergies or asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pain, anxiety or depression, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. This is one of the most important reasons why it’s so important to tell your dentist about any medications that you’re taking. Dr. Galaif can make recommendations to help relieve dry mouth symptoms and prevent cavities.

Many older adults have gum, or periodontal disease, caused by the bacteria in plaque, which irritate the gums, making them swollen, red and more likely to bleed. One reason gum disease is so widespread among older adults is that it’s often a painless condition until the advanced stage. If left untreated, gums can begin to pull away from the teeth and form deepened spaces called pockets, where food particles and more plaque may collect. Advanced gum disease can eventually destroy the gums, bone and ligaments supporting the teeth leading to tooth loss. The good news is that with regular dental visits, gum disease can be treated or prevented entirely.

According to the American Cancer Society, there are approximately 35,000 cases of mouth, throat and tongue cancer diagnosed each year. The average age of most people diagnosed with these cancers is 62 years old. During dental visits, Dr. Galaif checks for any signs of oral cancer. Regular dental visits are important because in the early stages oral cancer typically does not cause pain, and early detection saves lives. Some symptoms you may see include open sores, white or reddish patches, and changes in the lips, tongue and lining of the mouth that last for more than two weeks.

Many retirees don’t realize that Medicare does not cover routine dental care. Begin to plan for dental expenses in advance of retirement, so dental health does not suffer once on a fixed income.  At Daniel N. Galaif, DDS we work with all patients to ensure you can receive the dental care you need, on a financial plan that works for your budget.

So if you have an aging parent, spouse or friend who has difficulty maintaining a healthy mouth on their own, you can help with two critical tasks:

  • Help them keep their mouth clean with reminders to brush and floss daily
  • Make sure they visit their dentist regularly

Mother’s Day Greetings!

It’s Mother’s Day – that time of year when we thank our Mothers for all they do, and have done, for us.  At Daniel N. Galaif, DDS we want to take this occasion to reach out to new and expecting Mothers, and provide information about the importance of proper dental care during pregnancy and early childhood.

Pregnancy is a unique time in a woman’s life, characterized by complex bodily changes, that can negatively affect your oral health. Pregnancy and early childhood are particularly important times to access oral health care, because the consequences of poor oral health can have a lifelong impact. Improving your oral health during pregnancy prevents complications associated with dental diseases, may reduce preterm and low birth weight deliveries, and has the potential to prevent early childhood cavities in your infant.

Common conditions during pregnancy include:

  • Gum Disease – during pregnancy, teeth and gums need special attention.
  • Enamel Erosion – for some women, morning sickness is a major symptom of pregnancy.
  • Dry Mouth – pregnancy dry mouth can put women at a greater risk for problems such as tooth decay and infections.
  • Pregnancy Gingivitis  – hormones can play a part in making your gums swell while pregnant.

If you notice that your gums are bleeding more frequently during pregnancy, the American Pregnancy Association recommends being proactive about it. Dr. Galaif might recommend more frequent professional teeth cleanings, at least until your baby is born.  Morning sickness is a part of pregnancy for many women. It also brings up concerns about oral health and pregnancy, as the acid from your stomach can be strong enough to contribute to tooth erosion, according to the American Congress of Obestricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). If you suffer from heartburn or acid reflux later in your pregnancy, the gastric acid can have the same effect on your teeth. Although you may be tempted to brush your teeth immediately after a bout of morning sickness, the best thing you can do to protect your enamel is swish with baking soda and water afterward. Baking soda is basic, meaning it will help neutralize the acid from your stomach. Mix about a teaspoon of it into a cup of water, then use the mixture to rinse out your mouth before brushing.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, the second trimester is often the ideal time to have minor dental work performed, such as having a cavity filled, or a professional dental cleaning if needed.  Contrary to popular belief, seeing your dentist for a teeth cleaning and dental X-ray is safe while you are pregnant. The ACOG actually encourages it, and recommends that OB/GYNs work with patients and their dentists to ensure that every pregnancy is a safe and healthy one.  Pregnancy means big changes in your body and your lifestyle; remember that it’s just as important to take care of your teeth and gums as it is the rest of you!

Once your child is born, his or her oral health is a priority for us, as it is for you, and we help our patients adhere to California’s Kindergarten Oral Health Requirement.  The sooner children begin getting regular dental checkups, the healthier their mouths will be throughout their lives. Early checkups help prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating and other medical issues. Youngsters with healthy teeth chew food easily, learn to speak clearly and smile with confidence.

Dr. Galaif recommends that your child visit us when they turn two, or as soon as their first tooth appears. This “well baby visit” teaches parents and caregivers how to care for their children’s teeth and help the child remain cavity-free.  Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 40 percent of children have decay by the time they reach kindergarten.

Oral health as we age holds just as much importance, and Dr. Galaif provides comprehensive senior dental services, as well as information and education about the daily oral care of semi-dependent and independent older adults.

So whether you are expecting your first child, Mother of a newborn or toddler, or someone who takes care of an aging Mother – make an appointment today, to ensure proper dental care, ongoing and lasting oral health!

Smile after teeth whitening

New Year…New “Smile Makeover?”

Happy New Year from all of us at Daniel N. Galaif, DDS!  Hope everyone had a great holiday season, and we look forward to sharing a wonderful 2018 with all of you.

As we start a new year, many of us think about what we would like to accomplish this year, personal things we may want to improve on, or change.  If you’ve been thinking about cosmetic dentistry, we’d like to remind you about the products and services we offer.

Cosmetic dentistry is aimed at creating a positive change to your teeth and to your smile, which can have dramatic results on your overall appearance; even the smallest step can boost confidence, self-esteem, and make you want to smile more.  Dr. Galaif has extensive education, training, and experience in improving the aesthetics of our patients’ oral appearance. Cosmetic dentistry combines the oral health benefits of general and restorative dentistry, to help give patients the smile you’ve dreamed of.

The latest advancements in dental technology allow us to utilize materials that are both durable and aesthetically pleasing. Materials such as porcelain or composite materials are closely matched to resemble the look and feel of your original teeth, giving a natural appearance to your teeth and smile.

Cosmetic dentistry has also taken leaps in utilizing less invasive techniques that conserve as much natural tooth as possible. These practices combined with advancements in natural-looking, tooth-colored dental materials make today’s cosmetic dental treatments more durable and predictable than in years past. We are also able to perform many procedures in-office that used to require referrals to other specialists. The need for you to see multiple dental care providers and experience multiple trips has been replaced by more convenient and advanced procedures, with significantly reduced recovery time.

Using modern advances in dentistry, our cosmetic dentistry procedures range from a basic color correction to replacing missing teeth, and everything in between.  We offer the full range of cosmetic dentistry services to our patients at Daniel N. Galaif, DDS as part of what we call your “Smile Makeover”:

  • Veneers
  • Bonding
  • Tooth-colored fillings
  • Metal-free crowns and onlays
  • Sealants
  • Deep Cleaning
  • Invisalign Clear Braces
  • Zoom Whitening

One of the most exciting new technologies we utilize allows us to provide our patients with onlays and crowns in a single office visit – we no longer need to create temporaries, or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second office visit has been eliminated, which means your damaged tooth can be replaced during one appointment!

Happy Halloween from Dr. Galaif’s office!

Halloween is a time when scary things populate front yards, and run the streets.  However, going to the dentist should not be scary.  At Daniel N. Galaif, DDS our warm and caring staff is focused on your comfort and safety.  From our Encino, California office, we have beautiful views that provide a relaxing setting during your dental visit.  Whether it’s a routine cleaning or more in depth work, we work to minimize your discomfort or anxiety with the state-of-the-art numbing procedures, nitrous oxide, or even anesthesia if you prefer…

Sedation at our Office

Are you afraid to go to the Dentist?  Do you have some anxiety about your dental visits?  Are you tired of having to make multiple dental visits to complete one course of treatment?  Our office is using new technology along with sedation dentistry, so you can now have all your dental needs addressed and completed in one visit.  You can also be asleep, and experience no discomfort at all.

Let me tell you about a recent case in our Encino, California office where we completed porcelain onlays and fillings for one patient all in one visit, all done at the same time while the patient was completely sedated.  Here is a video of this exciting day in our office:

With an anesthesiologist present, we pre-scanned all of the teeth, then we prepped the teeth and did a post scan of them.  At that point we were able to design and mill the onlays, then we placed them in the patient’s mouth to ensure a perfect fit.  Next it was time to add customized shading to onlays, and after they were stained, glazed, and fired, we completed the cementation.  All of this was done in one single office visit, and the patient was sedated and comfortable the entire time.  The patient did not need to have any temporaries, and will not need to return to our office for another visit to have us cement the final restoration

We have an anesthesiologist present in the office, so your comfort and safety is the highest priority.  All the dental work is metal free, and the onlays look and feel like real teeth.

Our technology is state-of-the-art, and we would be happy to demonstrate it for you at your next visit.  Give us a call at (818) 789-6789, or email info@DrGalaif.com to make an appointment today!

Groundbreaking Technology!

I have been in dentistry for more than 25 years, and I am excited to share with you one of the most exciting new innovations, Same Day Crowns and Onlays!

Welcome to the new age of Dentistry!  We have cutting-edge dental technology that allows us to provide you with a new ceramic crown or onlay in one, single office appointment.  Right here in our Encino, California office.

Think about that.  Up until now, you would come in for impressions, which would then be sent out to a lab.  You would be fitted with a temporary, which you would wear for several weeks until your next appointment. You would not be able to eat on that side of your mouth.  Then, at that follow-up visit, you would finally have your permanent crown or onlay in place.

With our new E4D technology we can scan your tooth, design the crown or onlay, and then create it right here in our dental office.  We perform any necessary adjustments, cement it in place and send you on your way, with your permanent restoration completed, start to finish, in a single visit.  There are no temporaries, and  no additional follow-up appointments needed.  These new, state-of-the-art crowns and onlays are all ceramic, so there is no need for any metal and no black line around your gums.  They look and feel just like your own tooth!

This new technology is truly groundbreaking, and we would be happy to demonstrate it for you at your next visit.  Give us a call at (818) 789-6789, or email info@DrGalaif.com to make an appointment today!
